Values and Norms

Values are beliefs and ideals about what is considered 'right' and 'wrong'. They are the general guidelines for our behaviour.

Values can be specific to a society, for example in Western societies there are high values put on having money and possessions in the past the Cheyenne of North America believed than to gain respect possession needed to be given away.

In Britain, values are concerned with respect for life, privacy, private property, the importance of money and success, achievement and hard work. Within the society there is often a pressure to conform to these values. More often than not the beliefs behind the values create the written laws and rules of a society
