Poverty and Inequality - Work

This module has examined the relationship between work and poverty and has looked at some of the affects of poverty. You have seen how children brought up in poverty are more likely to live in poverty themselves and this is one of the reasons why the affects of poverty must be taken seriously. Poverty not only affects individuals at one time but the affects may carry on for generations. The concept of private troubles and public issues is important as the affects of poverty make it a public issue.

The present Labour Government has promised to reduce child poverty and has taken approximately one million children out of poverty by 2004. The long term goal of eradicating childhood poverty within a generation is going to be more difficult to achieve.
