The Virtual Training Suite tutorials aim to help university and college students to develop Internet research skills to assist with their coursework and assignments. The tutorials were written by a national team of UK university or college lecturers and librarians. They recommend key websites in their subject and help students to make discerning use of the Internet to help find information for coursework, literature reviews or personal research. The activity made up one of the five learning outcomes of the module “Management for Engineers 1(MEC 018105)”. The students were studying part time and had two-hour practical session once a week. Teaching in practical sessions, students were give software (Ms Project 2007) demonstrations using projector. The word files of the demonstration steps with the practical exercises were uploaded on the wiki (http://mec08105practical.pbworks.com/w/page/8760845/FrontPage) It helped students in assessing the lectures online at home and at their work place. Online lecture notes also helped students in completing the practice exercises. Students were asked to create their individual wikis and upload their work on it. Second, blogs were used for the students’ group work of presenting a poster. The exercise framed one of the major elements of the continuous assessment. Two groups of three and four students were formed. Each student was required to make their contribution to the group work. Each group was assigned a blog and only group members were allowed to post the message on it. The other group members could read and add a comment if they want. The blogs helped students in collaborating online, although they were working at different places in Scotland. Blog posts helped group members to see their contribution to the group work as well as overall progress of the group work. Risks must be appraised within resource constraints (and the influence of chance). Decisions taken affect subsequent events. Can you steer the site safely through this maze? The resource can be used in the teaching of lawyers about occupiers’ liability, as well as construction and real estate students and also environmental management students. The simulation can be run in-lecture (up to 80 students, fits within an hour-long session – can be completed within 15-20 minutes if sufficient resources) (to test out group decision making skills) and individually. It has been successfully used at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
