<description>Conceptual Models for Mentors - Learning 1 - Learning from Experience

Jane Stubbafield

Much of mentoring is about helping your client learn from experiences that they have, but what impact does this have on the way you mentor, how can you find out how they like to learn the best, and how can you put over information in a way that helps someone learn in a more effective way? These are the concepts we will be looking at in this session. The resource has been developed through the Learning from WOeRK project and seeks to support learning in the work place. <link>http://dspace.jorum.ac.uk:80/xmlui/handle/123456789/16001</link>
<description>Designing the Curriculum

Dr. Holly Smith

Dr. Phyllis Creme

Most of the CPD4HE materials are about designing the curriculum, whether it involves incorporating writing into a course, considering how technologies can support student learning, designing appropriate assessment, assessing key skills or reflecting on how your own values are manifest in your courses and your approach to teaching. &#13;
&#13;
This unit contains links to the CPD4HE materials on these topics in addition to activities and an annotated bibliography that focus on key questions relating to curriculum design and development in higher education.

<description>Designing and planning teaching

Dr. Clive Young

The unit contains a set of Powerpoint slides which outline the activities during a three-hour workshop for early career HE teaching staff. The materials could be adapted by workshop leaders or used for self-study purposes. The CPD4HE project brief was to emphasise digital literacies and e-learning and that is evident in this unit.  &#13;
&#13;
The Notes pages in the presentation contain Clive Young’s comments on the teaching session, together with references and brief comments on these. Three short videos were used in the session and the code for embedding these is also included in the Notes.

<description>Quality in Higher Education

Dr. Jane Hughes

These materials have been used in the second module of a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. In the first module, participants had considered ways in which they could develop and improve their teaching by obtaining feedback from their students and through observing and being observed by peers. The resources here move the focus to a programme, department or institutional level. The first is an exploratory activity that considers different perspectives on the ‘Quality’ of HE teaching and learning. The second looks at institutional approaches to peer observation of teaching and, particularly, at changes that might be needed in order to accommodate an increase in technology-enhanced learning and new interdisciplinary courses.

Dr. Jenny Marie

Dr. Rosalind Duhs

This unit contains a PowerPoint presentation about assessing key skills, with explanatory notes, and an audio recording of the two authors talking through the presentation. As they discuss the presentation they consider what key skills are, how they fit into the curriculum, why it is important to assess key skills and how this can be done. In doing so, they also raise questions about the purposes of higher education.

<description>Learning to Teach Inclusively OER Videos. Deaf Awareness.

University of Wolverhampton

At the University of Wolverhampton under the Open Educational Resources Programme, jointly supported by JISC and the HEA, we are developing a multi-media open access module for HE staff - Learning to Teach Inclusively. As part of the project we are sharing series of video clips. This clip was taken from a workshop on Deaf Awareness in which lecturers in Sport and Education participated. The aim of the session was to provide the lecturers with key information about the needs and requirements of Deaf students and to help them think about how they might rethink their curriculum, assessment and pedagogy so that Deaf or hearing impaired students could participate as fully as possible in the mainstream activities, along with all students.  Questions arose from this session around reasonable adjustments, working with Deaf support workers, fitness to practice standards, placements, curriculum and assessment.&#13;

<description>Learning to Teach Inclusively OER Videos. Threshold Concept. Interview.

University of Wolverhampton

At the University of Wolverhampton under the Open Educational Resources Programme, jointly supported by JISC and the HEA, we are developing a multi-media open access module for HE staff - Learning to Teach Inclusively. As part of the project we are sharing series of video clips. In this clip Professor Christine Hockings interviews Professor Glynis Cousin. Glynis is one of the pioneers of the work on Threshold Concepts.  Following a brief outline of the theory, Glynis gives an example of a threshold concept in her own subject and explains why it was a troublesome concept for students. She also explains how she would know that a student had ‘mastered’ the concept or not.&#13;
Glynis goes on to explain the how the use of threshold concept theory can help in the construction of an inclusive curriculum, arguing that if you focus on threshold concepts,  you pare down  the content, you allow the student to come back to them, and you try to teach them in different ways to accommodate different ways of learning. &#13;

This resource seeks to develop OER literacy and encourage the use, reuse and subsequent production of such resources. It was created as a result of the authors’ participation in C-SAP’s 'Cascading Social Science Open Educational Resources' project and puts forward ‘anarchogogy’ as a pedagogical position. In its entirety, it is intended to be a staff development programme for lecturers working at HE in FE institutions but its composite parts can be individually used by anyone interested in different approaches to teaching and learning. The resource adopts reflexive and recursive methods in order to access the circles of feedback facilitated by the OER movement.

<title>How to avoid plagiarism learning object</title>
<link>http://dspace.jorum.ac.uk:80/xmlui/handle/123456789/15926</link>
<description>How to avoid plagiarism learning object

Trevor Day - University of Bath

The How to avoid plagiarism module is a flexible resource that can be used by students on their own or under the supervision of staff. It was written for undergraduate students in the first or second year of their degree at the University of Bath, a research-intensive UK University. But other kinds of student, including postgraduate students returning to study after years in employment, have found it of benefit.&#13;
&#13;
The module begins with a stated set of learning outcomes. It gives guidance and examples, includes quizzes (with feedback) and ends with review questions and a references section. A glossary gives definitions for technical terms used in the module.&#13;
&#13;
This module, which was slightly adapted from the original in Spring 2011, was originally devised at the University of Bath in 2010 by a team: Dr Trevor Day, Royal Literary Fund Fellow, wrote the material; Linda Humphreys, Science Faculty Librarian and the project’s manager, and Dr Bridgette J. Duncombe, Undergraduate Director of Studies for Chemistry, edited the material; Chris Wentzell, Information Librarian, created the module in eXe software.&#13;
&#13;
This module was one of six ‘Academic Writing Skills’ modules developed by the above team in conjunction with other University of Bath staff. The other modules were: Critically evaluating what you read, Writing an essay, Writing a practical report, Getting your argument across, and Citing and referencing. The creation of the ‘Academic Writing Skills’ modules was funded by the University of Bath Teaching Development Fund (2009-2010) and the University of Bath Library. The suite of modules receives continuing support from the University of Bath Library.&#13;
&#13;
Guidance for staff/developers&#13;
• If you intend to use this module with your students, it is advisable that you work through the material yourself beforehand. By doing so you can check that you agree with its content and can best decide how to integrate its use into your learning plans for students.&#13;
• The content has been provided as a zip file IMS/SCORM package that can be added to your VLE (Virtual Learning Environment). To provide an example of the content included in this file, screenshots of some of the materials have been made available as an online presentation.

<description>Skills in Higher Education

Dr Jenny Marie

Dr Rosalind Duhs

This is one of ten resource units developed and released by the CPD4HE project. The resources support the professional development of HE teachers. They are aimed particularly at staff working towards HEA accreditation but are available to anyone who may find them useful.

University of Exeter

Open STEM is a HEA/JISC-managed project to release staff development materials, with particular emphasis on resources for teachers in mathematics and biosciences. Open STEM recognises that in order to encourage staff and students to engage with the UK PSF effectively we must relate the pedagogy to their subject-specific teaching experiences.
