<title>Climate Impacts and Adaptation</title>
<link>http://dspace.jorum.ac.uk:80/xmlui/handle/123456789/15857</link>
<description>Climate Impacts and Adaptation

Faculty of Engineering and Design Distance Learning - University of Bath

The core text and links to resources for an M-level unit in Climate Impacts and Adaptation, from the MSc Integrated Environmental Management by Distance Learning (http://www.bath.ac.uk/iem/).&#13;
&#13;
There are two principal learning objectives for the unit. Specifically, upon completion of the unit students should be able to:&#13;
a) Convince decision-makers in your organisation of the business case to manage the physical risks and opportunities of climate change. Why do decision-makers in your organisation need to consider climate change?&#13;
b) Develop and implement a rigorous, cost-efficient and continuous process to increase the resilience of your organisation to the threats, and enhance its ability to take advantage of the opportunities, of climate change.&#13;
&#13;
This OER includes core text for Section A, focussing on the adaptation imperative, including the state of climate science, climate change controversies, impacts of climate change and the available limiting and coping responses.&#13;
&#13;
In studying this unit, the core text acts as a guide to prompt independent study around a series of focus questions, aiming to create a climate literate student who can make a cogent case for the climate adaptation imperative. &#13;
&#13;
The core text forms part of a series of guided study activities for the M-level unit, through which students apply new knowledge within their own professional context. &#13;
&#13;
The core text and resources may provide a useful resource for planning a course of study in this field or act as a guide for self-study in the subject area.

<description>Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment

Faculty of Engineering and Design Distance Learning - University of Bath

The Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment is an extract from an M-level unit in Life Cycle Assessment, from the MSc Integrated Environmental Management by Distance Learning (http://www.bath.ac.uk/iem/). The unit is currently under re-development; the core unit text will form the basis for a new online unit of study.&#13;
&#13;
This unit aims to provide the student with an understanding of Life Cycle Assessment as an environmental management tool and a detailed knowledge of how to apply it in practice.&#13;
&#13;
The introductory section, Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment, may provide a useful resource for planning a course of study in this field or act as a guide for self-study in the subject area.&#13;
&#13;
The learning aims of this study section are as shown below:&#13;
• provide an insight into the historical perspective of Life Cycle Techniques&#13;
• Provide overview of Carbon Footprinting methodology and their links to Life Cycle Assessment tools&#13;
&#13;
After completing this section students should be able to:&#13;
• Be able to describe Life Cycle Assessment: what it is and how it is used

<description>Communication and Information Management Storyboard

Faculty of Engineering and Design Distance Learning - University of Bath

A storyboard and outline for an M-level unit in Communication &amp; Information Management, from the MSc International Construction Management by Distance Learning (www.bath.ac.uk/ace/icm/).&#13;
&#13;
This unit aims to review the construction process and the information needed to carry it out, to understand the role of communication in successful project delivery, to introduce a range of information and communication technology (ICT) applications and to provide an opportunity to reflect and apply leading-edge ICT solutions to industry based problems.&#13;
&#13;
The unit is taught and assessed in a way which encourages problem solving through an evolving case study and which provides students with the ability to design their own communication and information management system.&#13;
&#13;
The unit overview and storyboard may provide a useful resource for planning a course of study in this field or act as a guide for self-study in the subject area.&#13;
&#13;
The learning outcomes of the unit are as shown below: &#13;
&#13;
After taking this unit students should be able to:&#13;
* Appreciate the importance of information to the success of construction projects;&#13;
* Understand the nature of information flow during construction projects;&#13;
* Be aware of the existing common problems related to communication and information management in construction;&#13;
* Identify the specific relevance of these problems in their workplace;&#13;
* Have knowledge of potential benefits offered by various ICT based communication and information management applications;&#13;
* Propose an appropriate system that helps to overcome the existing communication and information management problems in their workplace.

This resource is a Power Pont presentation with embedded audio and animations on magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) is one of the magneto-optic effects; it describes the changes of light reflected from magnetized media. A Kerr microscope relies on the MOKE in order to image differences in magnetic orientation. In addition to a regular optical microscope, a polarizer and analyzer are needed as a source and sensor for polarized light.

<description>Direct-current (DC) magnetron sputtering system

James Wheelwright, The University of Sheffield

This resource is a video for the use of experimental equipment: DC magnetron sputtering. Magnetron sputtering is an extremely flexible coating technique that can be used to coat virtually any material. Sputtering is basically the removal of atomised material from a solid by energetic bombardment of its surface layers by ions or neutral particles. Magnetron sputtering can be done either in DC or RF modes. DC sputtering is done with conducting materials. If the target is a non conducting material the positive charge will build up on the material and it will stop sputtering. The resourse covers substrate preparation (generic) and demonstration how to use the equipment.

The Scottish Resource Centre for Women in SET (SRC), based within FECCI, has carried out a series of highly successful equality and diversity training workshops within colleges and universities across Scotland. The training is specifically for students and apprentices studying construction or built environment subjects and is designed to increase their awareness of an increasingly diverse workplace. The need for this type of training is evident in the fact that women (and other minority groups such as black and minority ethnic communities) are significantly under-represented within built environment careers, making up only about 1% of the workforce at trade level. These training workshops were developed in conjunction with ConstructionSkills Scotland and consist of a three hour interactive workshop. Students are encouraged to discuss diversity issues and are invited to challenge their perceptions where relevant. Opportunities for facilitated group discussions are provided and students are asked to work through work-place case studies. Students are also shown a DVD developed by the SRC and ConstructionSkills which features under-represented groups working in the sector. Feedback from students and apprentices who attended the training was extremely positive.
