<description>DataTrain: research data managmeent training modules in Archaeology

Lindsay Lloyd-Smith

Looking after digital data is central to good research. We all know of horror stories of people losing or deleting their entire dissertation just weeks prior to a deadline! But even before this happens, good practice in looking after research data from the beginning to the end of a project makes work and life a lot less stressful. Defined in the widest sense, digital data includes all files created or manipulated on a computer (text, images, spreadsheets, databases, etc). With publishing and archiving of research increasingly online we all have a responsibility to ensure the long-term preservation of archaeological data, while at same time being aware of issues of sensitive data, intellectual property rights, open access, and freedom of information.&#13;
&#13;
The DataTrain teaching materials have been designed to familiarise post-graduate students in good practice in looking after their research data. A central tenet is the importance of thinking about this in conjunction with the projected outputs and publication of research projects. The eight presentations, followed by group discussion and written exercises, follow the lifecycle of digital data from pre-project planning, data creation, data management, publication, long-term preservation and lastly to issues of the re-use of digital data. At the same time the course follows the career path of researchers from post-graduate research students, through post-doctoral research projects, to larger collaborative and inter-disciplinary projects.&#13;
&#13;
The teaching material is targeted at co-ordinators of Core Research Skills courses for first year post-graduate research students in archaeology. The material is open access and you are invited to re-use and amend the content as best suits the requirements of your university department. The complete course is designed to run either as a four hour half-day workshop, or 2 x 2 hour classes. Alternatively, individual modules can be slotted into existing data management and core research skills teaching.

<description>Beating the Bounds: Defining and Mapping Boundaries

Paula Aucott

University of Portsmouth

Finding out about the lives of people who lived before us makes most sense when presented within the actual boundaries that existed in their time. These are sometimes defined by physical features in the landscape like walls or ditches, but do not have to be. This tutorial focuses on the changing boundaries of Great Britain and shows how these geographies can be used to help us understand and find people in the past.

The earliest surveys were made by people travelling around Britain describing what they saw, who they met, and sometimes what they themselves did. This tutorial focuses on what we can learn from them about Britain, not just about the individual places they visited.

The census is a count of total population and total households across an entire nation. It is taken at regular intervals. In most cases it is broken down into sex and age groupings, but can have many additional categories. This tutorial focuses on the history of counting people in Great Britain via the Census.

The Franchise is the right to vote in public elections. Over the last two hundred years there have been large changes in who was allowed to vote, and in the areas (parliamentary constituencies) in which voting took place. This tutorial covers changing voting rules and changing electoral geography from the First Reform Act of 1832 to the present - the development of Britain's democratric processes from the domain of the privileged few, to a system all adults have the right to participate in.

Land Utilisation Surveys are snapshots of the use of the land at a particular point in time. They resulted in maps showing general land use across great Britain. They have been done at roughly thirty year intervals in the 1930s, 1960s and 1990s.&#13;
&#13;
The Agricultural Census gathers information from across England and Wales. Every farm gives details on what crops are being grown and which animals are being raised. It has been collected annually, in June, from 1866 to the present and is sometimes called the "June Agricultural Survey".&#13;
&#13;
This interactive tutorial focuses on what we can learn from them about the history of our landscape.

<description>Changing Britain and the Heroic Age

Heather Lane

Scott Polar Research Institute

University of Cambridge

The heroic age of Antarctic Exploration is usually said to begin in the reign of King Edward VII (1901-1910), and is embodied by an outlook on life characterised by ‘muscular Christianity’ which emphasised daring and chivalry, as well as being prepared to make sacrifices for one’s country in undertaking heroic deeds. Setting off to discover the poles was another way men could ‘do their bit’ for Britain in the spirit of what was heroic and daring. This resource describes Britain During the Heroic Age, The Heroic Age of Exploration, Heroic Age Expeditions in the Freeze Frame Collection, The Death of Robert Falcon Scott, The Death of Ernest Shackleton and the End of the Heroic Age, Modern Views of the Heroic Age.

The Arctic region is inhabited by many indigenous groups, who live in the world’s most northerly latitudes, but each group has its own distinct culture, traditions and history. The Freeze Frame collection contains images dating from 1875, showing interactions between explorers and indigenous groups. This resource charts the different relationships explorers to the Arctic region have had with indigenous groups and how outsiders have viewed these groups.

The word photograph was first used by Sir John Herschel in 1839 - it originates from the Greek words meaning light and writing. The Freeze Frame collection covers many of the key developments in photography, charting not only polar exploration but also the emergence of photography. This information resource briefly outlines the scientific developments in photography before looking specifically at photography in the polar regions.

Scott Polar Research Institute

University of Cambridge

The Freeze Frame website presents an online catalogue of over 20,000 images from the historic negative collections at the Scott Polar Research Institute.  The negatives cover expeditions into the Arctic and Antarctic during the period 1845-1982 and representing some of the most important visual resources for research into British and international polar exploration. These images are presented with ancillary material from the collections of the Institute, and critical essays contextualising much of the material. &#13;
&#13;
The resources section allows you to find out more about the environment of the polar regions, and read about the people and expeditions from which the Freeze Frame images are taken.

Historic Polar Images, 1845-1982, from the Scott Polar Research Institute. A collection of historic images of life and work in the polar regions.&#13;
&#13;
The Freeze Frame website presents an online catalogue of over 20,000 images from the historic negative collections at the Scott Polar Research Institute.  The negatives cover expeditions into the Arctic and Antarctic during the period 1845-1982 and representing some of the most important visual resources for research into British and international polar exploration. These images are presented with ancillary material from the collections of the Institute, and critical essays contextualising much of the material.&#13;
&#13;
There are iconic and familiar images from the ‘Heroic Age’ of Antarctic expeditions of Robert F. Scott and Ernest Shackleton, as well as other generations of explorers who braved the polar regions before and after them. With remote access to these digital images, we hope to encourage new audiences to explore the polar world for themselves.&#13;
&#13;
The whole resource illustrates the development of polar technologies, including photography, over this period. For the first time researchers will be able to search and browse the selected content, much of which was uncatalogued or inaccessible because of the inherent fragility of the negatives from which the images are taken.

<description>History and Guilt - a case stufy

EDINA

EDINA

This case study investigates the use of propaganda film as a stimulus for student discussion of historiographical controversies surrounding the crimes of the Second World War in Europe. It was created by Dr Julian Wright, a Historian and specialist in the field of modern European intellectual and political history and a published author of works on modern French history. Film clips are used as a stimulus material for student-led discussion of the historiographical issues surrounding the problem of genocide. Film clips were used at the very outset of the course, to raise issues and to provoke debate. In later stages of the course, students developed their own themes and problems that were related to, but not necessarily defined by, the film clips used in the introductory session. Resource developed for EDINA by Deborah Wood based on a case study created by Dr Julian Wright, Department of History, Durham University
