<description>CPU-OS Simulator

Besim Mustafa

A simulation package which includes a CPU simulator (with RISC architecture using Harvard style memory with data and instruction cache simulators, a 5-stage pipeline simulator with jump prediction), an OS simulator (inc. a deadlock simulator and virtual memory simulator) and a compiler/assembler (with performance and size optimizations and static out of order instruction optimization). All simulations are integrated in one educational package and support each other as in the real modern computer systems.

<title>Learning to Teach Inclusively OER Videos in Mathematics</title>
<link>http://dspace.jorum.ac.uk:80/xmlui/handle/123456789/15881</link>
<description>Learning to Teach Inclusively OER Videos in Mathematics

University of Wolverhampton

University of Wolverhampton

At the University of Wolverhampton under the Open Educational Resources Programme, jointly supported by JISC and the HEA, we are developing a multi-media open access module for HE staff - Learning to Teach Inclusively. As part of the project we are sharing series of video clips.&#13;
This series of video clips in mathematics was selected from a 2 hour collaborative problem solving session with a diverse group of students. The aim of the session was to encourage the sharing and generation of mathematical thinking and to encourage students to articulate their thinking publically.&#13;
The teacher starts by setting a series of mathematical problems that each small group are required to solve without the aid of calculators and under a tight time limit. At the end of this time period each group is required to provide their solutions and to present to the rest of the class, their methods and solutions to at least one of the questions.&#13;
This form of group problem solving in mathematics encourages students to articulate their thinking, test their conjectures, and make mistakes, etc. in a small and ‘safe space’ before presenting their ideas to the whole group. The imposition of tight time limits encouraged the students to pool their resources but this can also encourage a focus on completing the task by individual specialisation, thus limiting the sharing of knowledge and development of strengths and weaknesses across the whole group. This ‘specialisation’ can be seen in one or two of the clips.&#13;
The clips also show small groups presenting their methods and solutions to the whole group. The teacher does not immediately respond to the group but instead invites comments, alternative methods, and encourages deeper mathematical thinking. Evidence of academic engagement and mathematical thinking can be seen in the ways students explain aloud how they had got stuck, how they arrived at their answer, by talking through their thought processes, identifying the knowledge they were drawing on, and by calling on other students to join in and share their thinking.&#13;
Finally, the students explain how they feel about working collaboratively in mathematics. They describe the benefits of collaboration and the importance of creating an environment of trust and support. This is key to an inclusive learning environment.&#13;
Project web-site – www.wlv.ac.uk/teachinclusively e-mail: oer@wlv.ac.uk Videos are in .mp4 format (H.264 compression) and are playable with most media players. If you have any problems with the playback we recommend free open source VLC media player – www.videolan.org or all of our published videos can be viewed online on www.vimeo.com/oer/videos in your browser. Please contact us if you need any help oer@wlv.ac.uk, or fill in Problem Report form - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEg4a1h6T0ZzenRkVnlIcW1iYXpadHc6MQ

Dr R. Field of the University of Nottingham

Dr J.C. Horton of the University of Nottingham

Dr S.V. Cobb of the University of Nottingham

Prof. S.E. Hill of the University of Nottingham

A suite of units for teaching statistics to non-mathematicians. The units begin with averages and continue to t-tests, the F-test, chi-squared and regression. Little maths is included; instead, the emphasis is on understanding behaviour. Many interactive examples are included and most units end with a test.

Internet for mathematics is a tutorial from the Virtual Training Suite. The Virtual Training Suite tutorials aim to help university and college students to develop Internet research skills to assist with their coursework and assignments. The tutorials were written by a national team of UK university or college lecturers and librarians. They recommend key websites in their subject and help students to make discerning use of the Internet to help find information for coursework, literature reviews or personal research. This is an archived version of the tutorial. As of the 1st of August 2011 any further development of the tutorials is being undertaken by TutorPro at http://www.vtstutorials.co.uk
